All About Insulation

Today we are going to discuss about insulation. Insulation acts as a barrier against heat and is essential for keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer. A well-insulated home provides comfort, cutting cooling and heating bills by up to half. This, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Choosing insulation

Insulation products come in two basic categories — bulk and reflective. To compare the insulating ability of the products, we need to check at their R-value, which measures resistance to heat flow. So, if it has high R-value, the level of insulation will be high. On the other hand, the products with the same R-value have the same insulating performance.

Check the information supplied on the product, including the R-value, the price per square meter and whether it must be installed professionally or can be DIY — some types of insulation require the use of masks and protective clothing. Ensure that it suits your particular application and fits within the space available. Ask if performance guarantees or test certificates are available.

Insulation types and their applications

Bulk insulation mainly resists the transfer of conducted and convected heat, relying on pockets of trapped air within its structure. Its thermal resistance remains the same regardless of the direction of heat flow through it.

Bulk insulation includes materials such as glass wool, cellulose fiber, polyester, and polystyrene.

Reflective insulation mainly resists radiant heat flow because of its high reflectivity and low emissivity. The thermal resistance of reflective insulation varies mostly with the direction of heat flow.

Reflective insulation is usually aluminium foil laminated onto paper or plastic and is available as sheets, concertina-type batts, and multi-cell batts. Together these products are known as reflective foil laminates or RFL.

Areas of Concern

Fire safety is a concern, but when the interior of the SIP is covered with a fire-rated material, such as gypsum board, it protects the facing and foam long enough to give building occupants a chance to escape.

As in any house, insects and rodents can be a problem. In a few cases, insects and rodents have tunneled throughout the SIPs, and some manufacturers have faced issues and have a look at the guidelines for preventing these problems, including:

Applying insecticides to the panels

Treating the ground with insecticides before and after initial construction and backfilling

Maintaining indoor humidity levels below 50%

Locating outdoor plantings at least two feet (0.6 meters) away from the walls

Trimming any over-hanging tree limbs.

Conclusion

Insulation is defined as a material or combination of materials which control the flow of heat. The materials can be adapted to any size, shape and any surface. A variety of finishes are used to protect the insulation from mechanical and environmental damage, and to enhance appearance. One more thing is thermal insulation is different from ceramic insulation.

The basic requirement for thermal insulation is to provide a significant path to the flow of heat through the insulation material. To accomplish this, the insulation material must reduce the rate of heat transfer by, convection, radiation, or any combination of this mechanism.
